خليليَّmy two friends كُفّاboth desist عنfrom ملامreproaching فتىًa youth صبِّlovesick
رويدكماgently, you two ماذاwhat يفيدُكُماbenefits you both عَتْبيreproaching me
My two friends, cease reproaching a lovesick youth.
Gently, you two—what do you gain by reproaching me?
تلومانِyou two reproach قلبيmy heart أنthat يحبّit loves جَهالَةٌfolly
ولمand have not تُورِداyou two brought قَلْبَيكُمَاyour two hearts موردَthe watering place of الحُبِّlove
You blame my heart for loving—such folly!
Yet you have not led your hearts to love's watering place.
إلىto اللهGod أشكوI complain إنindeed فيin القلبthe heart لوعةًa burning anguish
يضيقis constricted بهاby it صدريmy breast ويشقىand suffers بهاbecause of it قلبيmy heart
To God I complain: there is a burning anguish in my heart,
Which constricts my breast and makes my heart suffer.
بليتُI am afflicted بمنwith someone لمْhave not أقضِfulfilled منهfrom him لُبانَتيmy desire
ومَنْand who ليَfor me لَوْif only أَنّيthat I قضيتُmet بهthrough him نَحْبيmy death
I am afflicted with one from whom I have not won my heart's desire,
And who could grant that I might meet my death through him?
وقَىmay protect اللهُGod منwhoever دلّguides الحِمامِDeath علىto فتىًa youth
لهhe has مقلةٌan eye لاnever تَستفيقُfinds respite منfrom الصبِّpouring out tears
May God protect whoever shows Death the way to a youth
Whose eye never finds respite from pouring out tears.
وماand not بيَin me بغضٌhatred للحياةfor life وإنّماbut rather
رأيتI found لقاءmeeting الموتِdeath أَروحَmore relieving لِلكربِof anguish
I bear no hatred of life; rather,
I have found meeting death a greater relief from anguish.
وحسبيand enough for me ضَنىًwasting sickness فيin الحُبlove أنيthat I لمhave not أجدْfound
سوىexcept الموتdeath للدّاءfor the illness المخامرlodged within منany طبّcure
And it is suffering enough in love that I have not found
Any cure but death for the illness lodged within me.
وبيand I am afflicted with جائرُunjust in الأحكامِjudgments لَمْwas not يرضَcontent فيin الهوىpassionate love
بقتلwith killing الورىhumankind حتىuntil تعدَّىhe went beyond إلىto السَّلبplunder
I am afflicted with one unjust in judgment, who in love was not content
With slaying humankind, but went further still, to plunder.
تلعَّبَhe sported ريَّانُbrimming with الشبابyouth بقَدِّهwith his figure
تلعُّبَlike the playing of أيديthe hands of الريحِthe wind بالغُصُنwith the branch الرطبِtender
Brimming with youth, he swayed his form,
As the wind's hands play with a tender branch.
ودونَand behind الشفاهthe lips اللّعسdusky حصباءpebbles لُؤْلؤٍof pearl

ومطّردٌand a running stream يجريflows منof الباردِcool water العذْبsweet
Behind the dusky lips lie pebbles of pearl,
And a stream flows with cool, sweet water.
دعانيhe summoned me إلىto حُكمِthe rule of الصبَّابةِardent longing بعدَafter مَاthat
سَلاّhad turned away رُفْقَتيmy companions عنfrom غيهاtheir waywardness وارْعَوىand came to their senses صحبْيmy friends
He summoned me to the rule of longing, after
My companions had outgrown their folly and my friends had come to their senses.

And he rose, showing me his glance and his figure,
Saying: Stand straight, if you wish, for thrusts and blows.
يقولونَthey say ليto me لاdo not ترمcast طرفَكyour gaze نحوَهtoward him
فتكرارُfor repeating رجْعِthe return of الطّرفthe gaze داعيةُan invitation to الحُبّlove
They tell me: Do not cast your gaze toward him,
For returning your gaze again and again invites love.
وهلand would نافعىbenefit me أنthat لاnot أراهI see him بناظريwith my eye

وقدwhile already رُسِمَتْhave been drawn تلكthose المحاسنbeauties فيin قلبيmy heart
And would it help me not to see him with my eye,
When those beauties are already drawn in my heart?
