May I be denied meeting you if I do not come to visit you,

even if a roaring forest lion stood in my way to you.

I shall lift the veils of my patience; none has succeeded

in gaining his desires without declaring himself openly.

And I shall put the reproachful women's words aside,

even if they blow upon me as whirlwinds.

Be gentle, O dusky-lipped one, with a lovesick man

who has become a byword current among lovers.

For love has left nothing of me but ribs

melting with longing, or tears rushing forth,

and a weak body, slender as your waist,

and a will to endure, languid as your eyelid.

My averted gaze makes you suspicious, yet I merely

steal secret glances at you, wary.

For I have enemies because of you; I fear their schemes,

and where you are concerned, by my life, I am right to be wary.

Envious souls who never cease, whatever the circumstance,

    drawing keen-edged, cleaving blades against my honor;

and the caprice of time, unjust in judgment, has never ceased

    to lead its nights as armies to war against me;

and lack of wealth has forced my pale camels to journey by night

    to where I find none to mend my bones;

and hopes placed in people who wish that I

    remain forever in straitened circumstances.

Shall I hope for them to ease my distress with riches,

when deprivation has already sunk its claws into them?

So, alas! How often I still come at evening

to their doors, hoping for wealth, and in the morning too.

Shall I seek someone provided for, who begrudges his provision?

Was not my Creator capable of that?

So, O seeker of sustenance from one like yourself,

spending the night dejected, keeping worries company:

I counsel you: seek no provider but God,

just as you have hoped for no forgiver but God.

    تجده قريباً حينَ تدعوه حاضِرا

    And call on none but God in every need;

you will find Him near, present when you call upon Him.

Will you sell your dignity for a trifle,

and return empty-handed, at a loss in the bargain, abased?

May God curse a man content to live

abased, humiliated, weak in spirit, bewildered,

pinning his hopes on a man each day and night,

while your Lord, Lord of the Throne, suffices you as a helper.

So, shame on me! How long shall I go on praising

and thanking any but the God of all worlds?

So tell those who strive in pursuit of greatness:

Come with us; let us weep for greatness and noble deeds.

For the hands of greatness have struck its tents,

and the abodes of noble deeds have fallen into ruin.

For how many noble souls have been humiliated,

and how many hearts have reached the throats!
