He kept faith with me and heeded no faultfinder's words,

And freely gave the sweetness of union, with no tryst arranged.

And rent the hide of night for union, traversing

Toward me, waste after waste of darkness.

One of the graceful beauties, whose face the radiant full moon mirrors,

On a bough, supple-jointed and smooth.

Nor have I forgotten the wine I drank from his dusky lips,

Its bubbles were pearls from a mouth of well-set teeth.

And one untouched by love asks me to renounce a passion

Before which my patience and fortitude falter.

Why not, then, when my heart was free of love for the graceful,

Unfettered, with passion's decrees in my hand?

May God cherish the days of youth—for how often in them

I gathered pleasure's fruits from their dew-fresh garden—

And a clan at Naʿmān of the arak trees, beloved ones

    Who are what I seek above all else, and my aim;

And a garden the clouds watered with goblets of their downpour,

And gray doves sang above it the melodies of Maʿbad.

And the east wind had played with its branches,

Some of them still, and others swaying.

And there the east wind fashioned for its river's wrist

From blossoms, ornaments of silver and gold.

We spent the day there, life in the first flush of youth,

While a kindly raincloud passed there at dusk and dawn,

Having unsheathed the gleaming swords of lightning,

And came on, driving one thundercloud after another with song.
