Do not linger once the fasting month has resolved to depart,

O Eid, and depart in peace.

    فهو عندي كسائر الأيّام

    All the world rejoices at Eid except me;

For to me it is like every other day.

It has dragged on for me because of my long poverty, until

It has become a year—and many a day is like a year.

I praise God—how many fleeting hopes

I have captured in the nets of sleep!

Whoever among mankind may be poor, I

Am rich with the treasures of dreams.

Yet I carry a soul that has shown me

That, through my contentment, Time is my servant.

My soul has grown so accustomed to contentment

That my hardship cannot be distinguished from my destitution.

I will not consent to give away the water of my face—my dignity—

For all time, in exchange for a little worldly dross.
