I have studied every art of passionate longing.

So ask about whatever occurs to you, and test me.

And ask no lover other than me,

for the arts of love were learned from me.

And say what you will in reproaching me; but if you do not

find in me any inclination toward it, then leave me be.

My soul would ransom him: supple of limb, sweet

of dusky lips, bitter in aloofness, sweet in his swaying,

slender of figure, radiant of face—

so say what you will of a full moon and a bough.

At times I speak his name openly, and at other times

I fear those who envy me over him, so I speak of him indirectly.

And I spend my life hoping for union,

yet hoping and wishing are of no avail.
