Are they gazelles of a covert, or lions of a lair,

that appeared before us on the slope of Yabrin?

How can one live who has lost his heart

amid white necks and black eyes?

I never thought that the lions of al-Shara

would become prey to large-eyed gazelles.

My father be his ransom! Never did my patience with him wane

but my sorrows [in] loving him grew.

A young gazelle who charges with a slender spear—his figure—

and with a sharpened sword—his eyelids.

Through his glance and figure, he left all people

    some struck, others pierced.

    فمضَى وعدتُ بصفقَةِ المغبون

    I sold my heart for a moment's pause on the day of parting;

so he departed, and I returned with a cheated man's bargain.
