Time has been unjust to noble men in its judgment,

and has treated men of virtue with oppression.

Some people say that estrangement lies in living abroad,

yet, by my life, what they say is not based on knowledge.

And here I am, alone among humankind,

a stranger, with my family and paternal cousins all around me.

I faced time's vicissitudes with my own resolve,

and determination; its keen swords did not blunt my determination.

And I showed the days the patience of a freeborn woman's son,

though they had emptied out every arrow in the quiver.

Nor did their vicissitudes seek vengeance against me,

and I had no crime but my virtues.

    ومَا المجدُ إلا الصَّبر للنّوب الدَّهْم

    And many a calamity's gloom have I dispelled through patience;

glory is nothing but patience in the face of dark calamities.

God curse this age! If I am not

the knight who defends honor, then who will defend it?

Do my foes foolishly hope to rival me,

when harsh Time has submitted to my judgment?

My pride is in my deeds, not in my people or my clan,

though I am the scion of mighty, lofty chiefs.

And mine is every rare marvel of wondrous verse,

like meadows on rugged uplands, visited early by autumn's first rain.

For if the radiant sun were a singing girl,

she would wear no necklaces but those of my verse.

And no envious man's words have sullied my honor,

even if he assails my honor and goes to extremes in reviling me.
