لِعدْلِكَto your justice قدindeed وجَهتُI directed ياO بنson of محمّدٍMuhammad
شكاتيmy complaint عنabout حُزنٍgrief مراجلُهits cauldrons تَغْليboil
To your justice I have directed, O son of Muhammad,
my complaint of grief whose cauldrons boil.
حنانيكyour mercy, I implore منfrom دهرٍfate غداhas become ليtoward me مُخادِعاًdeceitful
يعاملنيit treats me بالجدِّin earnest فيin صورةthe guise of الهزلِjest
I beg your mercy against a fate that has turned deceitful toward me,
treating me in earnest in the guise of jest.
رمانيit shot me بنبلwith arrows لمwas not يُرشfeathered قطّever مثلَهاtheir like
ولاnor بلغتhas reached غاياتهاtheir utmost range همّةُthe ambition of النّبلِarrows
It shot me with arrows whose like has never been feathered,
nor has the ambition of arrows reached their utmost range.
وصدَّرand it gave precedence to دُونيover me كلِّevery أحمقfool جَاهِلٍignorant
وكلَّand every لئيمٍbase man لاdoes not يُمرُّmake bitter ولاnor يُحْليmake sweet
And it gave precedence over me to every ignorant fool,
and every base man who brings neither bitterness nor sweetness.
إلىfor كمhow long أعانيI endure الفقرَpoverty فيكمamong you وأنتمُwhile you
لَعَمريby my life أحمَىmore protective مِنthan أبيthe father of الشبلِthe cub للشِّبلtoward the cub
How long must I endure poverty among you, when you are,
by my life, more protective than a lion is of his cub?
ويَظْلميand wrongs me صرفُthe vicissitudes of الزّمانtime وأنتمُwhile you
لَعَمريby my life أحمَىmore protective مِنthan أبيthe father of الشبلِthe cub للشبِّلtoward the cub
And must time's vicissitudes wrong me, though you are,
by my life, more protective than a lion is of his cub?
ويَظْلمنيand wrongs me صرفُthe vicissitudes of الزّمانtime وأنتمُwhile you
بكمthrough you رُفِعتْwas raised بينَamong الورىhumankind رايةُthe banner of العدلِjustice
And must time's vicissitudes wrong me, though you are the ones
through whom the banner of justice was raised among humankind?
فَفُكَso undo بأيْديwith the hands of الجودِgenerosity أسريَmy captivity مُنْعِماًbestowing favor
عليّupon me فإنّيfor I am منbecause of ديُونيmy debts فيin كبْلfetters
So end my captivity with generosity's hands, bestowing favor
upon me, for I am in fetters because of my debts.
ديونُdebts أخافتْنيhave frightened me وَبَثَّتْand spread عَلائَقيmy entanglements

Debts have frightened me and spread my entanglements
among people, until I almost take fright at my own shadow.
