Such is the world, and you know it well.

Then how long this indifference and delusion?

    فكلٌّ في حَبَائِلِها أَسيرُ

    It lowers its people on ropes of treachery;

So everyone is captive in its snares.

How long will you keep relying on it?

The dwellings and palaces delight you.

And you laugh with mouth wide open, not knowing

What the grievous day will bring.

You wake heedless amid a life of ease,

    Surrounded by hopes and joy.

    تَسيرُ به اللّيالي والشَهورُ

    And your life dwindles every day;

The nights and months carry it along.

And you are on the brink of the fires, unless

The All-Forgiving Lord rescues you with His pardon.

Awake—woe to you!—from the slumber of indifference,

And do not be heedless: the warner has come.

    Gird yourself earnestly for departure,

For departure and the journey have drawn near.

And take piety as a fortress for a day

When defenders and helpers will be few.

Do not be deluded by this world; beware,

For many a mortal has perished in it.

How many kings have journeyed upon it,

As though they had never journeyed upon it!

And how many lofty palaces they built—

Yet did anything hold them but the graves?

Would anyone wise be deluded by this world?

And would anyone discerning yearn for this world?

Take heed: many an obstinate tyrant

Will have a broken heart tomorrow morning.

And many a needy person has little standing,

Yet great worth in his Creator's sight.

And many a person nurtures a far-reaching hope,

But his short life is cut off before he reaches it.

Alas, my sorrow! Can my burning thirst be eased,

And my thirst quenched, by abundant tears?

And who can grant me tears, when my heart

Has never softened, though rocks grow soft?

How many sins I have committed behind curtains,

While the Lord of the Throne watches, fully aware.

And what use are curtains? Never hidden

From Him is what the curtains conceal.

How long this presumption toward Him to whom,

By my life, every being must return?

And why do I not fear the torment of a day

When throats and chests are constricted,

And abandon every sin for fear of a fire

In whose Creator I seek refuge and protection?

I hold a good opinion of Him—exalted is He—

And my sin is slight beside His mercy.

    فَما مِقْدارُ مَا يَثني الشكورُ

    He is exalted in majesty beyond the greatest thanks;

What, then, can the grateful one's praise amount to?

    فلا وزَرٌ لَدَيهِ ولاَ وَزيرُ

    He is too holy to need a minister or helper;

He has neither a refuge nor a minister.

O God of creation, pardon me! You know best

What I reveal and what my inner self conceals.

I sinned and repented of my sin, and indeed I

Am poor and in need of forgiveness.

If You forgive, it is grace; or if You punish,

It is justice, O Just and All-Powerful One.

And my good opinion of You tells me that I

Will come into Your overflowing beneficence.

And send blessings upon the intercessor for all creation,

When resurrection gathers all creation together,

And his kin, the radiant guides in truth—

All of them, as long as the ages succeed one another.
