    فإنّه الموتُ لا يُبقي على أحدِ

    Drape yourself in the garb of patience and fortitude;

    for death indeed spares no one.

    And face every calamity with self-command,

    if you have no fortitude in the face of trouble.

    Indeed, the anguish that a person displays

    is something that avails nothing when God's decree comes.

    For death's cups must inevitably make their rounds

    to everyone among us, near and far.

    متى أتى المرءَ لم ينقصْ ولم يزِدِ

    Everyone has a lifespan leading to an appointed end;

    when it comes to a person, it is neither shortened nor prolonged.

    والمرؤ مِن موتِه يَسعى إلى أَمدِ

    A young man's life is a racecourse, and death its finish;

    and a man hastens toward his death's appointed term.

    And it may ease the anguish within the heart

    that none endures but the One, the Self-Sufficient.

    O pearl of the necklace in the house of al-Mu'ayyad, no

    heart or liver has your loss spared.

    If numbers could avert any of fate's irrevocable decree,

    we would have guarded you with abundant numbers and arms.
