أيّwhat سيفٍsword نضتْهُunsheathed it ليagainst me جفناكَاyour two eyelids
أيwhat رُمحٍspear هزّتْهُbrandished it ليagainst me عِطفاكَاyour two flanks
What sword have your eyelids unsheathed against me?
What sword did your eyelids unsheathe for me
What spear have your flanks brandished against me?
What spear did your arms hurl at me
كنتُI was لاnot أعرفُknow الغرامpassionate love إلىuntil أنْthat
عرّفتْنيtaught me فنونهits arts عَيناكاyour two eyes
I did not know passionate love until
I did not know love until
your eyes taught me its arts.
Your eyes taught me its ways
أنتَyou أخفيتنيyou made me disappear نحولاًthrough wasting away فقلso tell ليme
كيفhow أقوىI have the strength علىfor احْتمالbearing جفاكاyour coldness
You have made me waste away to nothing; so tell me:
You weakened me to frailty, so tell me
How can I find the strength to endure your coldness?
How can I bear your abandonment
لَوْif لِشَمسِbefore the sun الضّحىmidmorning بَرَزْتَyou appeared لَقَالَتْit would say
لَعَنَmay curse اللهُGod مَنْwhoever أحبَّloves سِواكاother than you
If you appeared before the midmorning sun, it would say:
If the radiant sun saw your face
May God curse whoever loves anyone but you!
It would say, damn those who love another
أَوor رأَىsaw البدرُthe full moon نورَlight وجْهكyour face نادىcalled out
تِهbe proud دلالاًin coquetry فأنتَfor you are أهلٌworthy لذاكاof that
Or, if the full moon saw the light of your face, it would cry:
Or if the full moon saw your light
Be proudly coquettish, for you are worthy of it!
It would call out to you, for you deserve that
