كأنّه في الأَثيل مِنهُ

بدر دجىً حفّه الظلامُ

As though, amid his luxuriant hair, he were

As if among its adorable ones a

a full moon of night, encircled by darkness.

Full moon of darkness the gloom did envelope

أنفقْتُ صبري على هواهُ

وحظيَ السُّهدُ والسّقامُ

وحظيَ السُّهدُ والسّقامُ

I spent my patience on loving him,

I spent all my patience upon his love

and my lot was sleeplessness and sickness.
