وأقسمُand I swear لوif جاراكَvied with you يحيىYahya بنson of خالدٍKhalid
وأقسمُ لو جاراكَ يحيى بن خالدٍ
لأَقْسَمَhe would surely swear ليسis not الفَضْلpreeminence إلاّexcept لِجَعْفَرِto Ja'far
لأَقْسَمَ ليس الفَضْل إلاّ لِجَعْفَرِ
And I swear, if Yahya ibn Khalid vied with you,
I swear if your neighbor was Yahya ibn Khalid
he would surely swear that preeminence belongs to Ja'far alone.
He would swear excellence belongs to none but Ja'far
فماfor … not البحرُthe sea إلاّexcept واحدٌone ليسَis not غيرهother than it
فما البحرُ إلاّ واحدٌ ليسَ غيره
وفيand in كلّeach كفٍّpalm منكof yours خمسةُfive أبْحُرِseas
وفي كلّ كفٍّ منك خمسةُ أبْحُرِ
For the sea is but one, no more,
The sea is but one, there is no other
and in each of your palms are five seas.
