وأشكو إلى المولى جوىً عن أقلِّه
يضيقis too narrow لعمريby my life البرّthe land أجمعُall of it والبحرُand the sea
يضيق لعمري البرّ أجمعُ والبحرُ
And I complain to the Lord of a burning anguish, the least of which
I complain to the Master of my heart's distress -
All the land and sea are too narrow to contain—by my life.
The land is too narrow, though the sea be vaster.

فهل مرّ لي يوماً ببالكُم ذكرُ
I soothe my wounded heart with remembrance of you;
With thoughts of you I try to heal my wounded heart -
So has a thought of me ever crossed your minds?
Did remembrance of me ever cross your mind?

وقد خانني في ذلك الموقف الصّبرُ
And I knew not, when the camels of your departure were bridled—
When I was left behind as the caravan moved on,
And patience had already betrayed me at that moment—
My patience failed me at that critical time.

Whether what I saw was death or the calamity of separation.
Is what I see death, or evil happenstance?
And is it longing between my sides, or glowing coals?
Is it longing in my heart, or burning ember?
