وفَضِيحتيand my disgrace فيat الحشرthe Gathering إنif لمnot تَسْتُرYou conceal
Alas, how long my sorrow and regret will be tomorrow!
Alas my long sorrow tomorrow and my regret,
And my disgrace at the Gathering, if You do not shield me!
And my disgrace on the Day of Resurrection if You do not conceal me.
واalas حيْرتيmy bewilderment إنif فازtriumph أقْرانيmy peers غَداًtomorrow
وَوَقَفتُand I stand وَحْديby myself وقفَةthe stance of المتحيرِّthe bewildered one
Alas for my bewilderment if my peers triumph tomorrow,
Alas my confusion if my peers succeed tomorrow,
And I stand alone, as one bewildered!
And I stand alone, standing confused and perplexed.
واalas سَوأتيmy shame نunclear fragment (likely 'if') أَفْردَتْنِيleft me alone حائراًbewildered

Alas for my shame if I am left alone, bewildered,
Alas my adversity if my family abandon me perplexed there,
By my family, and my people forsake me there!
And hand me over to my comrades.
واalas لهفthe anguish of نفسيmy soul حينَwhen تكشَفُare stripped away فيon غدٍthe morrow

عنfrom سُوءthe evil of أعماليmy deeds ثيابُthe garments of تَسَتُّريmy concealment
Alas for my soul's anguish when tomorrow are stripped away
Alas the anxiety of my soul when the clothes of my coverings
From my evil deeds the garments of my concealment!
Are removed tomorrow, exposing my evil deeds.
وَوَدِدْتُand I shall wish فيهِon that day عندَat نَشْرِthe unfolding of صحيفتيmy record

And on that day, when my record is unfolded, I shall wish
I wish that when my record is spread,
That I had been sawn apart, and that it had not been unfolded.
I would be spread (forgiven) and it would not be spread (exposed).
ياO نفسُsoul كمhow long هذاthis النّزوعُyearning إلىtoward الهوىdesire
طالَhas lasted long اكتسابُكِyour accumulation للذِّنوبِof sins فأقصرِيso desist
O soul, how long this yearning toward desire?
O soul, how long will this inclination toward passion continue?
Long have you gone on accumulating sins; desist!
You have long acquired sins, so refrain.
ياO عينُeye ويحكِwoe to you إنَّindeed أقرانيmy peers ثوَوْاhave come to rest
فيin الرَّمِسthe grave فَاعْتَبريso take warning بهِمْfrom them واسْتَعبريand weep
O eye, woe to you! Indeed, my peers have come to rest
O eye, woe to you! My peers have settled
In the grave; take warning from them, and weep.
In the graves, so be admonished by them and learn a lesson.
هذيthese ديارهُمtheir dwellings بَلاَقعbarren wastes بعدَهُمْafter them
فَسَلِيso ask البَلاقعَthe barren wastes عَنْهمُabout them واسْتخبريand seek news
These are their dwellings—barren wastes after their passing.
These were their abodes, empty after them,
So ask the barren wastes about them, and seek their news.
So ask the ruins about them and inquire.
واذْريand shed المدامعَtears حسرةًin regret وتلهُّفاًand anguish
وتغسّليand wash yourself بمياهِهَاwith their waters وتطهّريand purify yourself
And shed tears in regret and anguish,
And let the tears flow in sorrow and yearning,
And wash yourself in their waters, and purify yourself.
And purify yourself by its waters and cleanse yourself.
فازَtriumphed الرِّجالُthe men الصَّالحونthe righteous بِسَبْقهِمby their taking the lead
ولحقْتُand I followed بعدهمُafter them لحوقَthe following of مُقصِّرِone who falls short
The righteous men have triumphed by taking the lead,
The righteous men succeeded with their precedence,
And I followed after them, as one who falls short.
And I joined them afterwards with the succession of a laggard.
ماwhat ليis with me غَفلتُI grew heedless عَنِof المعادِthe Resurrection وشانِهand its import
وأمنتُand I felt safe هولَthe terror of نقاشِexacting scrutiny يومِthe day of المحشرِاthe Gathering
Why did I grow heedless of the Resurrection and its import,
Why did I neglect the place of return and its affair,
And feel safe from the terror of strict reckoning on the Day of Gathering?
And feel secure from the horror of the Day of Gathering?
ماwhat ليis with me عَكَفتُI devoted myself علَىto الذّنوبsins وكَسْبهاand committing them
وأمِنْتُand I felt safe مِنfrom تَبعاتهاtheir consequences أمْنَwith the security of البريthe innocent one
Why did I cling to sins and keep committing them,
Why did I devote myself to sins and acquiring them,
And feel safe from their consequences as an innocent man does?
And feel safe from their consequences, feeling fully secure?
وهَصَرتُand I bent غُصْنَthe bough of اللَّهوِidle pleasure فيin روضِthe garden of الهوىdesire
بيدِwith the hand of البطالَةِidleness لَيْتَنيif only I لمnot أَهْصِرِI bent
And I bent the bough of idle pleasure in the garden of desire,
I wasted the branch of frivolity in the meadow of passion
With the hand of idleness—if only I had not bent it!
With the hand of idleness; would that I had not wasted!
وجَرَيتُand I ran طَلْقاًfreely فيin مَيادِينِthe fields of الصّباyouth
ومَشيتُand I walked فيهاin them مشيةthe gait of المسْتكبرِthe arrogant one
And I ran freely in the fields of youth,
I flowed freely in the plains of youth,
And walked in them with an arrogant man's gait.
And walked in them with the gait of an arrogant.

بادٍplain to see بَشاشتُهاher cheerfulness وباطنهاand her inward self وريdiseased
O suitor of this world, beware, for she
O you who addresses the life of this world, beware, for it
Shows her cheerfulness plainly, but her inward self is diseased.
is a land whose exterior and interior are desolate.
سَلَبتْhave stolen زخارفُهاher adornments نُهاكَyour reason ورُبَّماand sometimes

Her adornments have stolen your reason, and at times
Its decorations robbed you, and sometimes
She has lifted a veil from her hideous inner nature.
It removed a mask, exposing something horribly ugly.
وأضَعْتَand you wasted عمرَكَyour life فيin عمارتِهاbuilding her up ولَوْand if

And you have wasted your life building her up; had you
You wasted your life constructing it, and had you known
Known her true nature, you would not have built her up.
The reality of its affair, you would not have constructed.
غَرَتْكَshe deceived you كاذِبةُfalse المُنىhopes فأَطْعتَهاso you obeyed her
لَوْif كُنتَyou were ذَاpossessing عَقلٍreason بهاby her لَمْnot تُغْرِbe deceived
She deceived you with false hopes, and you obeyed her;
The liar of wishes deceived you, so you obeyed it.
Had you possessed reason, you would not have been deceived by her.
Had you had any sense, you would not have been deceived.
