وَاسوءalas for the wretchedness of حَاليmy state فِيin غدٍtomorrow
لَقَبيحِbecause of the vileness of ماwhat قَدindeed كانcame to pass مِنّيfrom me
Alas for my wretched state tomorrow,
My worst state will be tomorrow
Because of the evil I have done,
For the ugliness of what I have done
وفَضِيحتيand my disgrace يومَon the day of الّجَزاthe recompense
إنْif لمnot تَجُدْbestow generously بالعَفْوِwith pardon عَنّيfor me
And for my disgrace on the Day of Recompense,
And my disgrace on Judgement Day
If you do not generously pardon me!
If You do not forgive me
كيفَhow التخلّصُescape منfrom عذابكَyour punishment
ليتَif only أمّيmy mother لمdid not تَلدْنيgive birth to me
How can I escape your punishment?
How can I be saved from Your punishment?
Would that my mother had never borne me!
If only my mother had not given birth to me
أَوْلَيتَor if only أنّيthat I لَمْdid not أعشْlive
لوif كانwere يجديof use لَيْتَif only أنّيthat I
Or would that I had never lived—
Or if only I had not lived
If only “would that I...” could do any good!
If only "if only" would avail me
