إنْif قيلit is said مَنْwho خَيْرُthe best of الورَىhumankind
إنْ قيل مَنْ خَيْرُ الورَى
بعدَafter النَّبيّthe Prophet المُرْسَلِsent as a messenger
بعدَ النَّبيّ المُرْسَلِ
If it is asked, “Who is the best of creation
If it is asked, “Who is the best of humankind
after the Prophet, the divinely sent Messenger?
after the Prophet sent as a messenger?
ومنِand who المواسيthe giver of solace والمواخِيand the brotherly companion
ومنِ المواسي والمواخِي
والمُواليand the loyal supporter والوليْand the guardian
والمُوالي والوليْ
And who was the selfless supporter, the brother,
And who offers solace and brotherhood,
the devoted ally and guardian?
and is the loyal supporter and guardian?
ومَنِand who الّذيthe one who فيin الرّوْعterror عَنْfrom
ومَنِ الّذي في الرّوْع عَنْ
أعدائهِhis enemies لَمْdid not ينْكلِrecoil
أعدائهِ لَمْ ينْكلِ
And who was it who, amid battle’s terror,
And who, amid terror, from
never recoiled from his enemies?
his enemies did not recoil?”
إنif قيلَit is said مَنْwho ذاthis one حازَattained هَذِيthese
إن قيلَ مَنْ ذا حازَ هَذِي
المكرماتvirtues فَقُلْthen say عليAli
المكرمات فَقُلْ علي
If it is asked, ‘Who attained these
If asked who attained these
noble virtues?’ say: ‘ʿAli—’
virtues, say: Ali—
خَيرُthe best of البريّةcreation والإمامُand the imam
خَيرُ البريّة والإمامُ
البرّthe righteous one بالنصّby the explicit declaration الجليclear
البرّ بالنصّ الجلي
the best of creation, the Imam—
the best of creation and the imam,
the righteous—by manifest designation.
the righteous one, appointed by the clear declaration.
قَدْindeed نَصَّهاhe explicitly declared it فيهconcerning him رسولُthe Messenger
قَدْ نَصَّها فيه رسولُ
اللهGod عنat أَمرِthe command of العَليthe Most High
الله عن أَمرِ العَلي
God’s Messenger expressly named him to it,
It was explicitly declared for him by the Messenger
acting at the command of the Most High,
of God, at the command of the Most High,
يومَon the day of الغديرِGhadir بمحفلٍat a gathering
يومَ الغديرِ بمحفلٍ
أعظمْhow great بهِit is منas a مَحْفِلِgathering
أعظمْ بهِ من مَحْفِلِ
on the day of al-Ghadir, before an assembly—
on the day of Ghadir, at a gathering—
how magnificent an assembly it was!
what a great gathering it was!
فثَنَتْهُthen it kept him away عَنْهاfrom it عُصْبَةٌa faction
فثَنَتْهُ عَنْها عُصْبَةٌ
جاءَتْit came بأَمْرٍwith an affair مُعْضلِdeeply troublesome
جاءَتْ بأَمْرٍ مُعْضلِ
Yet a faction turned him away from it,
Then a faction kept him from it,
coming with a dire, confounding affair.
bringing a deeply troublesome affair.
