صرفتُ عن الكيميا هِمّتي

وصرَّفتُها في اكتساب الأدبْ

وصرَّفتُها في اكتساب الأدبْ

I turned my ambition away from alchemy,

I diverted my determination from chemistry

And devoted it to the pursuit of literature.

And directed it towards acquiring refinement

فما قُلتُ للبدرِ أنت اللّجين

فما قُلتُ للبدرِ أنت اللّجين

ولا قلتُ للشمس أنت الذهبْ

ولا قلتُ للشمس أنت الذهبْ

So I did not say to the full moon, 'You are silver,'

So I did not say to the full moon you are silver

Nor did I say to the sun, 'You are gold.'

Nor did I say to the sun you are gold
