طوِّلْgo on at length فشوقيfor my longing باعُهُits reach أَطْولُlonger
ولُمْand reproach فلاfor ... not أسمعُI listen لاnot أعقلُI reason
Prolong it—for my longing’s reach is longer.
Go on at length, for my longing's reach is longer.
And blame me: I neither hear nor reason.
And reproach me, for I neither listen nor reason.
الحُبّlove لاnot يخرجُdeparts عَنfrom مهجتيmy heart
والعذلُand reproach فيinto أذنيَّmy ears لاnot يدخلُenters
Love will not depart from my innermost soul,
Love does not leave my heart,
nor will reproach enter my ears.
And reproach does not enter my ears.
قدalready ملأَfilled القلبَthe heart الهوىpassion قَبلَهُbefore it
فدعْهُso leave it حتّىuntil يخرجdeparts الأوَلُthe first
Passion had filled the heart before it,
Passion filled the heart before reproach;
so leave it until the first occupant departs.
So leave it be until the first departs.
وانظرand look إلىat مَنthe one who فيin غراميmy passion بهfor him
شاركنيshared with me منfrom قبلكbefore you العذّلُthe reproachers
And look upon the one with whom I am enamored:
And look at the one in whose love
the reproachers before you came to share it with me.
The reproachers joined me before you.
فَشُبْهةًfor the specious argument العَذْلِof reproach إذاwhen ماemphatic particle بداappears
وجهُthe face الّذيof the one who همتُI adored بهhim تَبطلْcomes to nothing
For reproach’s misgiving—whenever there appears
For the case for reproach, when there appears
the face of the one I adore—comes to nothing.
The face of the one I adore, comes to nothing.
وقلتَand you said بيin me منbecause of حبّهlove for him جِنّةٌmadness
صدقْتَyou spoke truly فانصحso counsel رجلاًa man يعقلwho reasons
You said that love of him has possessed me with madness.
And you said that love for him has driven me mad.
You spoke truly—so counsel a man who can reason.
You spoke truly—so counsel a man who can reason.
