مَتَى بطيبِ الوَصْلِ عَيْشِي يَطيب
O you with the full moon’s countenance and a slender bough’s stature,
O rising full moon, with straightened spear,
When will my life grow sweet with the sweetness of union?
When will my life be sweetened by union with you?
وياand O غريبَrare in الحُسْنِbeauty رفقاًbe gentle بمنْwith the one who

غرّبَهُ هذا الجمالُ الغرِيبْ
And O you of rare beauty, be gentle with the one
O stranger to beauty, have mercy on one
Whom this rare beauty has estranged.
Whom this strange beauty has exiled.
أشمتَّyou made others gloat أَعدائيmy enemies بطولِthrough the length of الجفاcoldness
أشمتَّ أَعدائي بطولِ الجفا
قُلْtell ليto me عدوٌّan enemy أنتَyou ليto me أَمْor حَبيبْa beloved
قُلْ لي عدوٌّ أنتَ لي أَمْ حَبيبْ
You have made my enemies gloat through your prolonged coldness.
My enemies rejoice at my long estrangement;
Tell me: are you my enemy or my beloved?
Tell me, are you a foe or a friend to me?
