We sought glory and attained whatever we wished of it,

When our traveler walked the path of glory.

We are the noble, sons of the noble; if

You do not know our noble deeds, ask our enemies.

And ask the tongue of lofty honors what it has recited about us,

And tell our pursuer, "You will not catch us."

Weakened—who restored it as we did?

Our evening traveler and our morning traveler walk along it.

Our traveler walks the path of the heights,

And finds his way by stars among our benefactions.

How many a miser you see among mankind—but no,

By God, may he never be one of us or among us!

Is glory known anywhere but in our dwellings?

And does generosity dwell anywhere but in our gathering place?

Never through all the days were we asked to offer hospitality

But we gave generously of whatever our hands held.

Nor disappoint the expectations of those who hope in us.

While victory's herald calls to us with glad tidings.

Near is Khurasan, if we seek it—and China too!

Passion does not sway our souls, nor

Does love of survival turn us from glory's path.

What fault do our foes find in us except ancestral honor,

Mighty, through which our judge and our near kin rose to eminence?

Indeed, if we summoned Time, commanding it,

It would rise willingly, answering our caller's voice.

Been ignorant of anything but lofty honor, glory, and faith.

My people are those who never drew their swords for battle

But returned as reciters of victory's verses.

A people who, when they don the robe of battle-dust, leave

Their enemies stripped of victory's garments.

If you meet them, you meet scholars, learned masters,

Or men thrusting sideways at their foes and shooting arrows.

When he arose among us, calling us by God's command.

And love for the family of God's Messenger is our nature,

And always the pride of our settled folk and our nomads.

Ask the imams about us: in what battle

Have we not supported them with our very lives?

Our family passed on in love of the Household,

And we walk in the footsteps of our forebears.

Who, then, can rival our glory, or contend with us,

Or match our stature, or come near us?

All humankind, except the blessed Family.
