ولمnor did I أنسَforget إذwhen زارتْshe visited وساديmy pillow وقدand already غداhad become
عليهاupon her منof اللّيلthe night البهيمpitch-black لَبوسُa cloak
Nor have I forgotten when she visited my pillow, and there now lay
When she visited my pillow, and the savage night
upon her a cloak of pitch-black night,
Had donned upon it the garb of gloom,
علىat حينa time when أودَىruined بيme أليمُthe pain of صدودهاher rejection
وبيand within me منof تباريحtorments الغرامpassionate love رسيسُa lingering trace
at a time when the pain of her rejection had undone me,
While her cruel separation left me in pain,
and within me lingered a trace of love's torments.
And the pangs of passion stirred me;
فبتْناso we spent the night بأَهْنَاin the most blissful العيشِliving فيin ذمةthe protection of الدُّجىnight's darkness
لناfor us منfrom أحاديثconversations الغرامpassionate love دروسُlessons
So we spent the night in sweetest bliss, under darkness's protection;
We spent the night in sweet intimacy, under cover of darkness,
we had lessons in love's discourse.
Deriving lessons of love from our conversations;
تغازلنيflirt with me منهاof hers عيونeyes مريضةٌlanguid
تُسَلّare consumed قلوبٌhearts دونهاbefore them ونفوسُand souls
Her languid eyes flirted with me—
Languishing eyes gazed at me,
before them, hearts and souls were consumed.
Melting hearts and souls;
وليسَand there is no لناfor us غيرother than الرّضابsaliva مدامةٌwine
ولاnor غيرother than لمياءdusky الشفاةthe lips كؤوسُcups
And we had no wine but the moisture of her lips,
We had only wine glasses for companions,
nor cups but dusky lips.
And lips wet with wine for cups;
فمِنْso from لَثْمِkissing ثغرٍa mouth كاللآليlike pearls مُنَضَّدٍneatly arrayed
إلىto ضمِّembracing قَدٍّa figure كالقناةِlike a spear-shaft يميسُsways gracefully
So we went from kissing a mouth with teeth arrayed like pearls
From a juicy mouth like a ruby,
to embracing a swaying figure like a spear-shaft.
To an embrace like a silver jug;
ونحْسُوand we sip مداماًwine ماnot رأتْit has seen كفَّthe hand of عَاصرٍa grape-presser
ولاnor كدّرتْهاclouded it بالمزاجِby mixing قسوسُpriests
And we sipped wine that had never seen a presser's hand,
We drank the wine that no censorious eye had seen,
nor had priests clouded it with admixtures.
Nor any bigot could trouble;
لياليnights لاnot شيبُgray hair المفَارِقِthe hair's partings ضاحكٌlaughing
علياat me ولاnor وجهthe face of الزَّمانtime عبوسُscowling
Nights when the gray at my hair's partings did not laugh
Nights where separation brought no gray hair,
at me, nor was the face of Time scowling.
Nor did the face of time frown;
وحقand it is incumbent علىupon أَهلِthe people of الصبَّابةpassionate longing طاعتيobedience to me
فإنّيfor indeed I فيهمamong them ماas far as علمتُI know رئيسُa chief
And lovers are bound to obey me,
And I have a right to command the wine pourers -
for, as far as I know, I am their chief.
For among them I knew no chief but myself.
