    And ask their dwelling where its people have settled,

    and in which wilderness its path lay.

    May rain water those camps and dwellings,

    where I reveled, when none but I visited them by night,

    when life was green, its folds lush,

    and the roots of my pleasure’s great trees had not withered.

    They departed from there that morning, leaving behind

    a heart’s last spark of life, whose throbbing knows no rest.

    My two friends, you have wearied me with your reproaches,

    and burdened me with a course I cannot bear.

    أَيحسنُ من بعدِ الوفاءِ عقوقُها

    You two seek to have my soul forget love;

    would its betrayal be fitting after faithfulness?

    And they are not alike, my two friends—know this:

    one whose soul is bound by love, and one whose soul is free.

    إذا لاحَ برقُ الأَبرقين يُسوقُها

    Lo, a lover’s soul is given to love’s cause;

    whenever the lightning of al-Abraqayn flashes, it drives that soul onward.

    And a graceful beauty whose supple figure captivates the bough,

    and whose dawning shames the horizon’s sun in brilliance,

    gave me to drink at the outset of youth and boyhood

    cups of love I never thought I would taste.
