Preeminence belongs to Haydara alone among mankind,

Over the nearest of people and the farthest.

So profess love for him, for whoever

Professes love for him is rightly guided.

Brother of the Chosen One and companion of guidance,

And guide of creation, himself rightly guided.

When the darkness of perplexities deepens,

He dispels the gloom of their black night.

And whenever he is called to a noble deed,

Then the peerless leader is enough for you.

And sufficient proof of his excellence is that

He never prostrated himself before any but the Guardian.

And that he whose brother is the Chosen One

Indeed holds the imamate from Ahmad.

Make clear to me who, alone among mankind, won

The explicit designation to the imamate from Ahmad.

He bestowed on him the imamate after himself,

And both were among the people at a public gathering.

And who but he is seen standing

At the Pool, giving mankind drink by hand?

And love for whom has become, among mankind,

    A sign of noble birth?

And the Messenger's very self, by the Scripture's explicit words—

And one's own self is not like the more distant companion.

And who slept in the Chosen One's bed,

While the eyes of the treacherous stayed awake?

And the eagle swooped down to his sandal

To ward off the black snake's harm from him.

And on the rocky slope, who kindled the fire of battle,

While the people had drawn back from beside a hand [wording unclear]?

And on the morning when Amr called for combat,

Was it Taym that came forth against him, or Adi?

Make it clear to us—woe to you!—for I

See the truth shining clear to the rightly guided.

You envied Ali for his excellence,

And whoever attains what he attained is envied.

And you opposed him through your whims,

    As slaves defy their master.

And you denied, from his excellence's radiance,

A light that towered above Farqad.

Nor is the sun disgraced if there is denial

Of its light's radiance by an inflamed eye.

Why, then, since you aspired to his stature,

Did you not race ahead to the goal of nobility?

And was any of you but he, in major ritual impurity,

Permitted to remain in the mosque?
