ولمّاand when تَناسَىchose to forget سيّديmy master كتبَletters عبدِهِhis servant
ولمand did not يأتِنَاcome to us منهfrom him كِتابٌa letter ولاnor رسلُmessengers
And when my master chose to forget his servant’s letters,
Though my lord forgot his servant and sent
And neither a letter nor messengers came to us from him,
No message, no envoy to lighten our discontent,
أتيناهُwe came to him نطويwe fold up الأرضَthe earth شوقاًout of longing وإنّماand only
لناours الحظّthe good fortune فيin إتيانِناour coming ولَهand his الفضلُthe favor
We came to him, folding up the earth in longing; and indeed,
We sought him out, traversing the earth in our yearning,
Ours alone is the good fortune in our coming, and his is the favor.
And we were blest by the visit, though the merit is his alone.

And to God be the loftiest praise and thanks, for He decreed
Thanks and praise to God, who decreed
That reunion should gather us together after our separation.
That after separation we come together again.
