واستخفت في عقله الألباب
The literary arts reached perfection in al-Mubarrad,
Complete in eloquence and refined in knowledge,
and other minds seemed slight beside his intellect.
Yet light in intellect and lacking wisdom.
غيرyet أنthat الفتىthe young man كماas زعمclaimed الناthe people (الناس begins here)
غير أن الفتى كما زعم النا
سُcompletion of الناس (‘the people’) دعيٌّan impostor claiming false lineage مصحِّفٌa misreader of texts كذابan inveterate liar
سُ دعيٌّ مصحِّفٌ كذاب
Yet the young man, as people have claimed,
But the youth, as people claim,
is an impostor, a misreader of texts, a liar.
Is a lying scribe and fabricator.
