أَياO طَيلَسانِيَmy cloak أَعيَبتَyou have baffled طِبّيmy medical skill
أَسِلٌّis it consumption بِجِسمِكَin your body أَمor داءُthe sickness of حُبِّlove
O my cloak, you have baffled my medical skill.
O narcissus that caused my sickness
Is there consumption in your body, or lovesickness?
Are you ill in your body or lovesick?
وَياand O ريحُwind صَيَّرَتنيyou have made me أَتَّقيكَfear you
وَقَدand indeed كُنتُI used to لاnot أَتَّقيfear أَنthat تَهُبّيyou would blow
And O wind, you have made me fear you,
O breeze that made me careful of you
Though I used not to fear your blowing.
When I used not to fear your blowing
وَمُستَخبِرٍand someone inquiring خَبَرَthe condition of الطَيلَسانِthe cloak
فُقُلتُso I said لَهُto him الروحُthe spirit مِنby أَمرthe command of رَبّيmy Lord
And when someone asked about the cloak's condition,
When someone asked about the narcissus
I said to him, "The spirit is by my Lord's command."
I said, “The spirit is by my Lord’s command”
