O Ibn Harb, I see in the corners
O son of war, indeed I see in the corners
of our house the like of what you clothed a group in:
Of our house, like what you have covered the group with
طَيلَسانٌa taylasan mantle رَفَوتُهُI darned it وَرَفَوتُand I darned الرَthe darn- (beginning of الرَّفو)
فوَ-ing (completion of الرَّفو) مِنهُin it وَقَدand already رَقَعتُI patched رِقاعَهits patches
a taylasan mantle I have darned, and darned the darn-
A worn out garment whose tatters I have sewn
ing in it, and patched its patches.
And I have mended its patches
فَأَطاعَso it obeyed البِلىdecay فَصارَand so it became خَليعاًthreadbare
لَيسَdoes not يُعطيgive الرَفّاءَthe darner فيin الرَفوِdarning طاعَهobedience
It obeyed decay and became threadbare;
So it surrendered to wear and became shabby
it will not obey the darner when he darns.
The tatters do not obey the mender
فَإِذاso whenever سائِلٌa beggar رَآنِيَsees me فيهِin it
ظَنَّhe thinks أَنّيthat I am فَتىًa young man مِنَamong أَهلِthe practitioners of الصِناعَهthe craft
So whenever a beggar sees me in it,
Thus when a beggar sees me wearing it
he thinks I am a young craftsman.
He thinks I am a lad of the working class
