دَعنيlet me أُبَكّيmourn كِسوَتيmy clothing إِذnow that وَدَّعَتit said farewell
فَلَأَزمَعَنَّso I shall surely resolve عَلىupon البُكاweeping إِذsince أَزمَعَتit resolved to depart
Let me mourn my clothing now that it has said farewell.
Let me weep for my garment as it bids farewell,
So I shall surely resolve to weep, since it has resolved to depart.
For I will persist in weeping as it departs.
ياO اِبنَson of الحُسَينِal-Husayn أَماdo you not تَرىsee دَرّاعَتيmy tunic
سَمَلاًa threadbare rag تَرَدَّتit cloaked itself بِالبِلىin decay وَتَدَرَّعَتand armored itself
O son of al-Husayn, do you not see my tunic—
O son of Hussein, do you not see my coat of mail,
a threadbare rag, cloaked in decay and armored with it?
Tattered and worn from the pain it has endured.
فيهاin it مِنَof التَمزيقِtearing ماso much لَوif أَنَّهُthat it
مَرَّتpassed بِهاover it ريحُwind الصَباthe east wind لَتَقَشَّعَتit would scatter away
There is so much tearing in it that, if
In it are rips and tears, that if breezed by winds
the east wind passed over it, it would scatter away.
Would have shredded and scattered without pause.
تَحكيit resembles تَخَرُّقَthe tatteredness of طَيلَسانيmy mantle إِنَّهاindeed, it
مِنهُfrom it تَعَلَّمتِit learned البِلىdecay فَتَضَعضَعَتso it fell apart
It resembles the tatters of my mantle; indeed, it
It tells of how my mantle was torn apart,
learned decay from it, and so fell apart.
Teaching the pain of rending and ripping anew.
لاmay not فَرَّجَrelieve distress الرحمنُthe All-Merciful عَنهُfrom it إِنَّهُindeed, it
أَعدىit infected ثِيابيmy clothes كُلَّهاall of them فَتَقَطَّعَتso they tore apart
May the All-Merciful grant it no relief; indeed, it
May God grant him no solace, for he has torn
infected all my clothes, and they tore apart.
Each of my garments until they were in tatters.
فَلَتَحمَدِso let praise اللَهَGod الجِبالُthe mountains فَإِنَّهاfor they
لَوif قارَنَتهُthey kept its company تَخَشَّعَتthey bowed low وَتَصَدَّعَتand they split apart
So let the mountains praise God, for they
So praise God, O mountains, for were you to face him
would have bowed low and split apart had they kept its company.
You would bow down in dread and split into pieces.
