ياO اِبنَson of حَربٍHarb أَطَلتَyou prolonged فَقريmy poverty بِرَفويthrough my mending
طَيلَساناًa cloak قَدindeed كُنتُI was عَنهُof it غَنِيّاin no need
O son of Harb, you have prolonged my poverty through my mending
a cloak I had no need of.
فَهوَfor it فيin الرَفوِthe mending آلُthe household of فِرعَونَPharaoh فيin العَرthe exposure (word beginning)
ضِexposure (word ending) عَلىto النارِthe Fire غُدوَةًin the morning وَعَشِيّاand in the evening
For in its mending it is like Pharaoh’s household being exposed
to the Fire, morning and evening.
زُرتُI visited فيهِin it مَعاشِراًgroups of people فَاِزدَرَونيso they scorned me
فَتَغَنَّيتُso I sang إِذwhen رَأَونيthey saw me زَرِيّاwretched
Wearing it, I visited groups of people, and they scorned me.
So I sang when they saw me looking wretched:
جِئتُI came فيin زِيِّthe garb of سائِلٍa beggar كَيso that أَراكُمI might see you all
وَعَلىand at البابِthe door قَدindeed وَقَفتُI stood مَلِيّاa long while
“I came in a beggar’s garb to see you,
and at the door I have stood a long while.”
