Ah, physician of bloodletting, are you aware
Alas, O healer of the hero's wrist, are you aware
of what your two hands have done to the hand of the man of glory?
Of what your hands have done to the hand of glorious fame?

حياء ندى فاقصد بدرعك في الفصد
You made blood flow from a forearm that bends with that hand,
You made blood flow from an arm too modest to extend
in generosity's modesty; be measured with your armor in bloodletting.
Except with shyness like the dew's delicate diffidence.

So you treated a hand that people know to be
You treated a hand that taught people it cannot
a remedy for adversity in wretched times.
Be cured, in such harsh times, of purpose and cunning.

أردت بأن أهدي على قدر ما عندي
And when the news-bearers came to us with word of his bloodletting,
When spies brought us news of his wounded wrist,
I wished to offer a gift in proportion to what I had.
I wanted to send what little I had as a gift.

فلم أر أمراً من ثناء ومن حمد
And I sought counsel, then took along my family and my neighbors,
But after taking counsel with my family and neighbors,
so I found nothing in the way of praise or thanks.
I saw no better course than praise and thanks.
