أَسَعيدُO Saʿīd قَدindeed أَعطَيتَنيyou have given me أُضحِيَّةًa sacrificial animal
أَسَعيدُ قَد أَعطَيتَني أُضحِيَّةً
مَكَثَتshe remained زَماناًfor some time عِندَكُمwith you all تُطعَمُbeing fed
مَكَثَت زَماناً عِندَكُم تُطعَمُ
O Saʿīd, you have given me a sacrificial animal
O Sa'eed, you have given me a sacrifice
that stayed with you for some time, being fed:
That stayed with you for some time, being fed
نِضواًa wasted beast تَعاقَرَتِfought one another الكِلابُthe dogs بِهاover her وَقَدand already
نِضواً تَعاقَرَتِ الكِلابُ بِها وَقَد
شَدّواthey charged عَلَيهاat her كَيso that تَموتَshe might die فَيولِمواso they might feast
شَدّوا عَلَيها كَي تَموتَ فَيولِموا
a wasted beast over which the dogs had fought; and already
Fresh food, while the dogs kept attacking her until
they had charged at her so she might die and they might feast.
They tried to kill her and devour her
فَإِذاso when المَلاthe crowd ضَحِكواlaughed بِهاat her قالَتshe said لَهُمto them
فَإِذا المَلا ضَحِكوا بِها قالَت لَهُم
لاdo not تَهزَأواmock بيat me وَاِرحَمونيand have mercy on me تُرحَمواyou will be shown mercy
لا تَهزَأوا بي وَاِرحَموني تُرحَموا
So when the crowd laughed at her, she said to them:
When she saw the scholars laughing at her, she said to them
“Do not mock me; have mercy on me, and you will be shown mercy.”
“Do not mock me, have mercy on me and you will be shown mercy”
مَرَّتshe passed عَلىby عَلَفٍfodder فَقامَتthen she stopped لَمdid not قَرِمcraving (likely a misprint for 'budge')
مَرَّت عَلى عَلَفٍ فَقامَت لَم قَرِم
عَنهُfrom it وَغَنَّتand she sang وَالمَدامِعُwhile the tears تَسجُمُstreamed
عَنهُ وَغَنَّت وَالمَدامِعُ تَسجُمُ
She passed some fodder and stopped, not budging [reading uncertain]
She passed by some food but turned away and did not
from it, and sang as her tears streamed:
Eat it, while tears flowed down her cheeks
وَقَفَheld الهَوىlove بيwith me حَيثُwhere أَنتَyou فَلَيسَso there is no ليfor me
وَقَفَ الهَوى بي حَيثُ أَنتَ فَلَيسَ لي
مُتَأَخَّرُretreat عَنهُfrom it وَلاnor مُتَقَدَّمُadvance
مُتَأَخَّرُ عَنهُ وَلا مُتَقَدَّمُ
“Love has held me where you are, so I have
My love has stopped me where you are, so I have
no retreat from there, nor any advance.”
