أَلَمhave you not تَرَsee فيin اِبنِson of أَبيAbī (father of) خَرزَةٍKharzah
يُحِبُّhe loves عُجاباًʿUjāb كَماas قَدindeed زَعَمhe claimed
Have you not seen how Ibn Abī Kharzah
Have you not seen the son of Abi Kharzah
loves ʿUjāb, as he has claimed?
Claiming to love Ujab as he alleges
وَلَيسَand there is not بِكَفَّيهِin his two palms مِنfrom حُبِّهاlove for her
سِوىexcept أَنthat يُدَلِّكَhe rubs himself أَوor يَحتَلِمhe has a wet dream
Yet all his two hands gain from loving her
Yet he has nothing to show of his love
is rubbing himself or having a wet dream.
Except to caress you or have a wet dream
إِذاwhen باتَhe spends the night سَكرانَdrunk مِنfrom حُبِّهاlove for her
وَأَصبَحَand he wakes مِنfrom جوعِهِhis hunger مُتَّخِمglutted
When he spends the night drunk with love for her,
When he sleeps drunk with love for her
and wakes glutted on his hunger,
And wakes up famished and starved
فَياthen oh لَكَfor you مِنof عاشِقٍa lover مُفلِسٍpenniless
أَخيpossessor of صَبوَةٍpassion موسِرٍwealthy مِنfrom عَدَمdestitution
then what a penniless lover—
What a bankrupt lover you are, my friend
a man of passion, rich through destitution!
A rich man in pretense and fantasy
وَنُبِّئتُهُand I was told of him زارَهاhe visited her لِيلَةًone night
تُبيلُmakes urinate الحِمارَthe donkey مِنَfrom القُرِّthe bitter cold دَمblood
And I was told he visited her on a night
I told him he visited her one night
that made a donkey urinate blood from the cold.
That would make a donkey bleed from lust
عَلَيهِon him قَميصٌa shirt لَهُbelonging to him واحِدٌone
يَقُصُّit recounts عَلَيكَto you حَديثَthe tale of الأُمَمthe nations
He wore a shirt, the only one he owned,
He had but one shirt to his name
which told you the tale of the nations.
That would tell you tales of nations
فَغَنَّتthen she sang فَآثَرَهاso he favored her بِالقَميصِwith the shirt
وَغودِرِand he was left عُريانَnaked كَالمُستَحِمlike a bather
Then she sang, so he gave her the shirt,
So she sang and he gave her his shirt
and was left naked like a bather.
And was left naked like one bathing
وَغَنّىand he sang وَقَدand already ضَرَبَتهُhad struck him الشَمالُthe north wind
وَأَصبَحَand he awoke مِنfrom بَردِهاits cold قَدalready صُدِمhe was stunned
And he sang, after the north wind had struck him
He sang on as the north wind struck him
and he had woken stunned by its cold:
And was left shattered by its cold
أَخَذتِyou took بُرَيديmy little cloak فَاِعرَيتَنيso you left me naked
وَأَورَثتِand you bequeathed جِسمِيَmy body طولَlength of السَقمthe sickness
“You took my little cloak and left me naked,
You have taken away my health
and bequeathed lasting sickness to my body.”
And caused my body prolonged sickness
