O son of Harb, you clothed me in a taylasan cloak
O son of war, you have clothed me in a worn-out garment,
grown weary of time’s company, turning away.
Filled with the company of time and turned rigid.
فَحَسبِناso we would judge نَسجَthe weaving of العَناكِبِspiders لَوif قيwere compared (first part)
فَحَسبِنا نَسجَ العَناكِبِ لَو قي
سَ(completion of ‘were compared’) إِلىwith ضُعفِthe frailty of طَيلَسانِكَyour cloak سُدّاa dam
سَ إِلى ضُعفِ طَيلَسانِكَ سُدّا
So we would judge spiders’ weaving, if compared
It would suffice that the spider's web were woven
with your cloak’s frailty, to be a dam.
To the weakness of your worn-out garment as a patch.

If I breathe in it, it splits wide open;
If I breathe in it, it splits into pieces,
or clear my throat in it, it rips apart.
Or if I sneeze in it, it falls apart in shreds.

لَو بَعَثناهُ وَحدَهُ لَتَهَدّى
It has been sent for darning so often that
Its swaying back and forth to patching has been so prolonged
if we sent it alone, it would find its way.
That if we sent it alone, it would collapse.
