تَهيمُyou are lovesick بِبَدْرٍfor a full moon ثُمَّthen تَرْجُوyou hope لَهُto him قُرْبَاnearness
لَعَمْريby my life لَقدْindeed حَاولْتَyou attempted مُمْتَنِعاًsomething unattainable صَعْبَاdifficult
You are lovesick for a full moon, then hope to draw near him.
You yearn for an unattainable moon then hope for its nearness
By my life, you have attempted something unattainable and hard.
By my life, you have surely attempted the impossible, the difficult
إِذَاif كُنْتَyou are تَهْوَىyou love البَدْرَthe full moon فاقْنَعْthen be content بِأَنْwith the fact that تَرَىyou see
سَناهُhis radiance عَلَىat بُعْدٍa distance وإِلَّاand otherwise فَمُتْthen die كَرْبَاof anguish
If you love the full moon, be content to see
If you love the moon, be content to see
His radiance from afar; otherwise, die of anguish.
Its radiance from afar, else die of anguish
وَإِنْand if لَمْnot يَدَعْكَallow you الدَّمْعُtears فانْظُرْthen behold جَمالَهُhis beauty
بِقَلْبِكَwith your heart إِنْif أَبْقىhas left الغَرامُpassion لَكَfor you القَلْبَاthe heart
And if tears will not let you see, behold his beauty
And if tears will not leave you be, behold its beauty
With your heart—if passion has left you your heart.
In your heart, if passion keeps your heart flames stoked
وَإِلّاand otherwise فَيكْفيكَthen suffices you الخَيالُthe phantom مُسلِّماًoffering a greeting
وَإِنand even if كُنْتَyou are مَنْone whose تَجْفُوshun مَضاجِعهُhis beds الجَنْبَاthe side
Otherwise, the phantom, offering a greeting, will suffice you,
Else let your imagination suffice
Even if you are one whose beds shun his side.
If you are one who turns from beds of agony
وَكُنْand be قانِعاًcontent مِنْهُfrom him وَحَسْبُكَand enough for you مَفْخَراًas a source of pride
بِأَنَّكَin that you تَضْحَىyou become مُسْتَهَاماًlost in love بِهِwith him صَبّاa passionate lover
And be content with him; it is glory enough for you
And be content with it, and let it suffice you pride
That you become lost in love with him, a passionate lover.
That you sacrifice, consumed with passion for it morning and night
