Will your turning away soon come to an end?

And will there be union with you, with no watcher?

O judges of beauty, what am I to do with a gaze

Whose like the hand-reared gazelle fawn has longed for?

It shot and, with diligence, struck my heart.

You spoke truly: everyone who strives hits the mark.

With what remnant of life, and with what eye

Can I seek a pleasant life in love?

While this remnant has no champion in loving you,

And this eye has no share of you.

    سَرَيْنَ وكُلُّ ذِي وَلَهٍ حَبيبُ

    And in those camel litters are departing women;

They journeyed by night, and every lovesick one is beloved.

When they unveiled, eyes fell downcast

Before them; they dealt death, and hearts broke.

So, O those tresses, will there be a dawn?

For in your night I bear a sorrow that melts me.

And O those glances, I see a marvel:

Arrows that hit their mark whenever they are broken.

And O those curving forms, tell us:

When will the supple bough show tenderness?
