لَنَاwe have صَاحِبٌa companion لاnot يَرْعَوِيhe heeds لِفَضيلةٍto virtue
لَنَا صَاحِبٌ لا يَرْعَوِي لِفَضيلةٍ
فَلَيْسَso there is no لَهُfor him عَقْلٌsense وَلاnor لِذَويهِfor his kin
فَلَيْسَ لَهُ عَقْلٌ وَلا لِذَويهِ
We have a companion who takes no heed of virtue;
We have a friend who cares not for virtue
so neither he nor his kin have any sense.
He has no sense, nor have his kinfolk,
أَلَستَare you not تَرَىyou see مِنْfrom عُظْمِthe enormity of ماhow هُوَhe جَاهِلٌignorant
أَلَستَ تَرَى مِنْ عُظْمِ ما هُوَ جَاهِلٌ
يُحِبُّhe loves أَباAbu (father of) بَكْرٍBakr وَيطْعَنُand he speaks ill فِيهِof him
يُحِبُّ أَبا بَكْرٍ وَيطْعَنُ فِيهِ
Do you not see how, in his profound ignorance,
Do you not see from how great is his ignorance
he loves Abu Bakr yet speaks ill of him?
He loves Abu Bakr yet maligns him
