تَعَدَّturn away عَنِfrom الغَرامِpassionate love فَلَسْتَfor you are not تَقْوَىstrong enough
تَعَدَّ عَنِ الغَرامِ فَلَسْتَ تَقْوَى
علىfor مَاwhat فِيهِis in it مِنْof كَمدٍanguish وَذُلِّand humiliation
على مَا فِيهِ مِنْ كَمدٍ وَذُلِّ
Turn away from passion, for you cannot bear
You shun passion, but you lack the strength
The anguish and humiliation it holds.
To bear such anguish and humiliation.
فَكَمْfor many مِنْa مُغْرَمٍlove-stricken lover قَدْindeed مَاتَdied عِشْقاًof love
فَكَمْ مِنْ مُغْرَمٍ قَدْ مَاتَ عِشْقاً
بِمَنْfor the one whom تَعْنِيyou mean وَلَمْand did not يَظْفَرْsucceed بِدِلِّwith a beloved
بِمَنْ تَعْنِي وَلَمْ يَظْفَرْ بِدِلِّ
For many a lover has died of love
How many lovers have died from love
For the one you mean, yet never won a beloved.
For the one you love, yet gained no requital.
