الشَّيْخُthe sheikh قَالواthey said قَدْindeed غَداhas become سَالِكاa spiritual wayfarer
الشَّيْخُ قَالوا قَدْ غَدا سَالِكا
فَقُلْتُso I said لِلنّارِto the Fire غَداhas become سَالِكاa wayfarer
فَقُلْتُ لِلنّارِ غَدا سَالِكا
They said, "The sheikh has become a seeker on the path."
The old man, they said, began to walk
So I said, "He has taken the path to the Fire."
So I said to the fire, he began to walk
لاdo not تَغْتَرِرْbe deceived بِالزُّورِby falsehood مِنْfrom فِعْلِهِhis deeds
لا تَغْتَرِرْ بِالزُّورِ مِنْ فِعْلِهِ
كَمْhow many a فَاتِكٍvillain تَحْسَبُهُyou consider him نَاسِكَاan ascetic
كَمْ فَاتِكٍ تَحْسَبُهُ نَاسِكَا
Do not be deceived by the falsehood in his deeds;
Do not be fooled by the lies of his acts
How many a villain you mistake for an ascetic!
How many deceivers you think are devout
