لَمْdid not تَجْرَحِwound السِّكّينُthe knife كَفَّthe palm of مُعَذِّبِيmy tormentor
إِلَّاexcept لِمعنىًfor a reason حُسْنُهits beauty مُتَحَقِّقُcertain
The knife did not wound my tormentor’s palm
The torturer's knife did not wound my palm
except for a reason whose beauty is beyond doubt:
Except to make real a meaning fair
هِيit مِثْلُlike مَاwhat قَدْindeed قِيلَwas said جَارِحةٌa wounding thing لَهُto him
وَلِكُلّand for every جَارِحَةٍlimb إِلَيهtoward him تَشَوُّقُyearning
It is, as has been said, something that wounds him,
It is as has been said a wounder of it
and every limb yearns for him.
And every wounder to it aspires
