أَمْسَىspent the evening الفُؤَادُthe heart عَلَىamid تَلهُّبِthe blazing of جَمْرِهِits embers
كَلِفاًenamored بِمَنْof him who فَتَنَbewitched الأَنَامَhumankind بِسِحْرِهِwith his magic
The heart spent the evening amid its blazing embers,
My heart kindled into flame for the one
Enamored of him who bewitched humankind with his magic.
Who enchanted souls with his magic
قَمَرٌa moon غَنِيتُI found sufficiency بِرِيقِهِin his saliva عَنْinstead of قَرْقَفٍwine
وَكَذَاand likewise غَنِيتُI found sufficiency بِنُورِهِin his light عَنْinstead of بَدْرِهِhis full moon
A moon—his saliva has left me no need of wine;
A moon whose light made stars dim
And likewise his light has left me no need of his full moon.
His brilliance made the full moon seem but a sliver
أَفْنَىconsumed الفُؤَادَthe heart بِحُسْنِهِwith his beauty وَجَمالِهِand his loveliness
فَالعَاشِقُونَso the lovers بِأَسْرِهِمْall of them فِيin أَسْرِهِhis captivity
He consumed the heart with his beauty and loveliness;
His beauty and grace consumed my heart
So lovers, all of them, are in his captivity.
Lovers captivated helplessly by his charm
فَكَأَنَّso it is as though ضَوْءَthe light of الصُّبْحِdawn نُورُthe radiance of جَبِينِهِhis brow
وَكَأَنَّand as though ظُلْمَةَthe darkness of لَيْلِهِhis night مِنْfrom شَعْرِهِhis hair
So it is as though dawn's light were the radiance of his brow,
The dawn's rays are the light of his brow
And as though the darkness of his night came from his hair.
The night's darkness is from his hair
