وَافىarrived الحَبيبُthe beloved بِطَلْعَةٍwith a countenance غَرّاءِradiant
وَافى الحَبيبُ بِطَلْعَةٍ غَرّاءِ
مِنْfrom فَوْقِabove قَامةِthe stature of صُعْدَةٍa straight spear سَمْراءِtawny
مِنْ فَوْقِ قَامةِ صُعْدَةٍ سَمْراءِ
The beloved came with a radiant countenance,
The beloved arrived with a radiant countenance,
above a stature like a dusky Ṣaʿdah spear.
Atop a figure like a tawny spear,
وَبِمُقْلَةٍand with an eye خَفَقَfluttered الفُؤادُthe heart وَقَدْand already أَتَتْit appeared
وَبِمُقْلَةٍ خَفَقَ الفُؤادُ وَقَدْ أَتَتْ
إنَّindeed الجُنونَmadness يكونُis فِيin السَّوْداءِthe dark pupil (also: black bile)
إنَّ الجُنونَ يكونُ فِي السَّوْداءِ
At his two glances the heart fluttered—and there came:
And with an eye that made the heart flutter when it appeared—
“Madness indeed resides in black bile.”
Indeed, madness dwells in the dark pupil.
