أَحْبابَناour beloved ones إِنْif باحَspoke openly فِيكُمْconcerning you بِالهَوىof love
أَحْبابَنا إِنْ باحَ فِيكُمْ بِالهَوى
صَبٌّa lovesick man بَكَىwept وَجْداًfrom longing بِكُمْfor you وتَهَتَّكاand cast off restraint
صَبٌّ بَكَى وَجْداً بِكُمْ وتَهَتَّكا
Our beloved ones, if love for you has been openly confessed
Our friends, if love awakens in you
by a lovesick man who wept in longing for you and cast off restraint,
A lover wept ardently for you and was distraught
قَدْindeed كَانَused to يَسْتَحْييfeel shy فَيُخْفِيهِand so hide it وَقَدْand already
قَدْ كَانَ يَسْتَحْيي فَيُخْفِيهِ وَقَدْ
نَزَحَdrained away الحَيَاmodesty مِنْfrom عَيْنِهِhis eye لَمَّاwhen بَكَىhe wept
نَزَحَ الحَيَا مِنْ عَيْنِهِ لَمَّا بَكَى
he once felt shy and hid it; yet
He used to be shy and hide it, but now
modesty drained from his eye when he wept.
Modesty has departed from his eyes when he weeps
