يَاO مَنْyou who إِذَاwhen وَعَدَpromises الوِصَالَunion لِمُغْرَمٍto a lovesick lover
يَلْوِيturns away وَيَقْنيand holds fast مَوْضِعَthe place of الهِجْرانِestrangement
O you who, when you promise union to a lovesick lover,
O you who when promising to unite with a lover
Turn away and hold fast to the place of estrangement,
Twists and squeezes the place of separation
لاdo not تُظْهِرنَّever show لِيَto me الوِدَادَaffection تَكلُّفاًas a pretense
مَاnot الآلُthe mirage مِثْلُlike الماءِwater لِلظَمْآنِto the thirsty
Do not feign affection for me;
Do not show me affection artificially
A mirage is not like water to the thirsty.
The family is not like water for the thirsty
