No, by the suppleness of those swaying forms,

and by a beloved whose beauty the crescent moon mirrored,

a lover's exposure in love is no disgrace

    when those deadly eyes gaze.

And I would ransom with my soul a gazelle; my heart obeyed

its longing for him when it defied its reproachers.

A moon whose cheek-down enhanced his beauty,

and thus, with it, he became a full moon within a halo.

A speaking idol: my guidance is my passion

in loving him; reproach, to me, is misguidance.

People worshipped his mole, so to it came

prophets from his temple, bearing a message.

    أَوْ بَدا مِنْهُ وَجْهُهُ فَغَزالَهْ

    If his eye gazes forth, he is a gazelle;

or if his face appears, he is the sun.

He said, when departure drew near and there overflowed

from my eyelids the rushing tears, 'What ails him?'

Is he, I wonder, unaware of what I endure,

or did he know what I conceal and feign ignorance?
