هَيْهَاتَfar from possible أَنْthat يَسْخُوhe be generous وَلَوْand even if بِسَلامِهِwith his greeting
مَنْhe who لَمْnot يَزَلْcease لِلْحَرْبِfor war لابِسَwearing لامِهِhis armor
Never will he be generous, even with his greeting—
Alas! He who wears the garment of war will never be gentle, even with a greeting.
He who has always worn his armor for war.
Exposing lovers with his glance, the ambassador looked towards the station of his arrows.
مُتَعَرِّضٌposing a threat لِلْعَاشِقينَto the lovers بِلَحْظِهِwith his glance
نَظَرَthe gaze الكَمِيِّof the armored warrior إِلَىtoward مَحَطِّthe landing place سِهَامِهِof his arrows
He menaces lovers with his glance,
A moon, I plucked roses at the start of his bloom,
Like an armored warrior eyeing where his arrows land.
And passion was harvested in me at its peak.
قمَرٌa moon جَنَيْتُI plucked الوَرْدَthe roses أَوّلَat the outset بَدْئِهِof his beginning
وَجَنَىand did harm عَليّto me الوَجْدُlonging عِنْدَat تَمَامِهِhis fullness
A moon—I plucked roses at his first appearance,
I knew him since he used to be fond of his cradle,
And longing harmed me when he reached his fullness.
And I suckled the breast of his love before he was weaned.
وَأَلِفْتُهُand I grew fond of him مُذْsince كَانَhe was يَأْلَفَfamiliar with مَهْدَهُhis cradle
وَرَضَعْتُand I suckled ثَدْيَthe breast هَوَاهُof his love قَبْلbefore فِطَامِهِhis weaning
And I have been fond of him since he was at home in his cradle,
Helping my matter was a kiss that sealed it,
And I suckled at the breast of his love before his weaning.
And my life standing straight embraced the branch of its pillar.
تَسْدِيدُsetting right أَمْرِيmy affairs سَدّsealing فِيهِhis mouth بِلَثْمَةٍwith a kiss
وَقِوَامُand the mainstay حَالِيof my condition ضَمَّembracing غُصْنَthe bough قَوامِهِof his stature
Setting my affairs right means sealing his mouth with a kiss,
A longing one whom love took his patience,
And my well-being rests on embracing the bough of his stature.
And his youthfulness raided his dreams.
وَمُتَيَّمٌand a love-stricken man ذَهَبَwent away الغَرامُpassion بِحلْمِهِwith his composure
وَجَنَتْand did harm صَبَابَتُهُhis yearning عَلىto أَحْلامِهِhis reason
And a love-stricken man—passion has carried off his composure,
Love seized him with its right and its left,
And his yearning has done harm to his reason.
And assassinated him from behind and in front of him.
أَخَذَseized الهَوَىlove بِيَمِينِهِby his right hand وَشِمَالِهِand his left hand
وَاغْتَالَهُand slew him treacherously مِنْfrom خَلْفِهِbehind him وَأَمَامِهِand in front of him
Love seized him by his right hand and his left,
And treacherously slew him from behind and from the front.
