مَنَعَتْdenied جُفُونيmy eyelids لَذَّةَthe pleasure of الإغْفاءِslumber
عَلقُattachment to المُنَىhopes وَتقسُّمُand the splintering of الأَهْواءِdesires
My eyelids were denied the pleasure of slumber
My eyelids were denied the pleasure of slumber
by attachment to hopes and the splintering of desires.
The noose of death took hold and fate turned cruel
عَجِلَhastened الزّمانُtime عَليَّagainst me فيin شَرْخِthe prime of الصّباyouth
بِتَشتُّتِwith the scattering of القُرَناءcompanions والقُرَباءِand kin
Time was swift to afflict me in the prime of youth
Time rushed against me in the bloom of youth
with the scattering of companions and kin.
With the dispersal of friends and kin
وَسوادُand the darkness of عَيْشِيmy life لَمْdid not يَدَعْleave ليfor me لَذّةًa delight
افْتَضُّهاI deflower it بِاللِّمَّةِwith the locks of hair السَّوْداءِblack
And the darkness of my life has left me no delight
And the darkness of my life left me no joy
to deflower while my locks are black.
That I could wrest with my blackened hands
ياO صَاحِبيَّmy two companions تَوجَّعاgrieve, both of you لِهوىَfor the love of فَتىًa youth
ألِفَgrew accustomed to الضّنىwasting sickness وَلواعِجَand the burning pangs of البُرَحاءِagony
O my two companions, grieve for the love of a youth
Oh my companion, anguished for the love a youth
who has grown used to wasting sickness and the burning pangs of agony.
Who made suffering his friend and fate his home
هَلْwhether غِيثَwas watered by rain رَبْعُthe dwelling of الحَيّthe tribe بَعْدَafter مَدامِعيmy tears
أَمْor أَمْسَكَتْheld back عَنْهُfrom it يَدُthe hand of الأَنْواءِthe rain-bearing stars
Was the tribe's dwelling watered by rain after my tears,
Will the spring rain ever come to my lands after my tears
or did the hand of the rain-bearing stars hold back from it?
Or has the hand of the clouds withheld its gift
أَحْبابَناour loved ones قُضِيَwas decreed الفِراقُparting وَلِيand I have يَدٌa hand
لِفراقِكُمْfor your parting لَكنْbut علىupon أَحْشَائِيmy entrails
Our loved ones, parting was decreed, and I have a hand
My loved ones, farewell came and I can only caress
for your parting—but it rests upon my entrails.
With my hands your memory within my chest
فَمرُواso bid, all of you الرِّياحَthe winds بأَنْto تَقُصَّrecount حَديثكُمْyour story
عِنْديto me فَماfor ... not يُبْدِيreveals الكتابُthe letter شِفائيmy cure
So bid the winds recount your story
So command the winds to recount tales of you
to me, for a letter brings me no cure.
For the book cannot express my remedy
وَدليلُand the proof of ذَلكَthat أَنَّthat طَرْفِيmy eye غَاسِلٌwashing away
قَبْلَbefore القِراءةِreading نَقْشَهُits script بِبُكائِيwith my weeping
And the proof of that is that my eye washes away
The proof is that before reading, my eyes
its script with my tears before I read it.
Wash its inscription away with my weeping
