فَدَتْكَmay they ransom you نُفُوسٌsouls قَدْindeed حَلاgrew sweet بِكَthrough you حَالُهَاtheir condition
وَأَضْحَىand became صَحِيحاًhealthy فِيin هَواكَlove for you اعْتِلالُهاtheir sickness
May souls whose condition has grown sweet through you be your ransom,
Souls have been sacrificed for you, their state altered by you,
And their sickness has turned to health in loving you.
And they have become whole in their love for you, healed by it.
مَلكْتَyou captured قُلوبَthe hearts of العَاشِقينَthe lovers بِطَلْعَةٍwith a countenance
يَرُوقُdelights جَمِيعَall الناظِرينَthe beholders جَمالُهَاits beauty
You have captured lovers' hearts with a countenance
You have captured the hearts of lovers with a glance
Whose beauty delights all who behold it.
Whose beauty captivates all who look upon it.
وَزَادَand increased بِكَthrough you الحُسْنُbeauty البَديعُwondrous نَضارةًin freshness
كأَنَّكَas though you were فيon وَجْهِthe face of المَلاحَةِloveliness خَالُهاits beauty mark
And wondrous beauty has gained freshness through you,
With you, beauty itself glows brighter,
As though you were the beauty mark on loveliness's face.
As if you were the mole on its cheek.
سَلَبْتَyou stole فُؤادَthe heart of الصَّبِّthe lovesick lover مِنْكَof yours بِقَامَةٍwith a stature
حَكَىimitated الغُصْنthe bough مِنْهَاfrom it مَيْلَهَاits sway وَاعْتِدَالَهَاand its straightness
You stole the lovesick lover's heart with your stature,
You have stolen the heart of the youth with your stature,
Whose sway and straightness the bough has copied.
Which told of the bending and straightness of a branch.
فَصِلْso unite with مُغْرَماًa lovestruck lover حَمَّلْتَهُyou burdened him مِنْكَbecause of you فيin الهَوَىlove
بَلابِلtorments وَجْدٍof longing لاnot يُطَاقُcan be endured احْتِمالُهَاenduring them
So unite with a lover whom, through love of you, you have burdened
Passionate lover that you burdened with desire for you,
With torments of longing that cannot be endured.
Tormented by passions too much to bear.
عَنَّappeared ليto me دُمْيَةًas a statue وَلاحَand shone هِلالاas a crescent moon
وَانْثَنَىand swayed صُعْدَةًlike a straight lance وَفرَّand fled عَزَالاas a gazelle (probably intended: غزالاً)
He appeared to me as a statue and shone as a crescent moon,
She appeared to me in a vision, crescent moon and starry night,
And swayed like a lance, and fled like a gazelle.
Bending gently, shying like a gazelle.
فَتَذَلَّلتُso I humbled myself حِينَwhen أَبْدَىhe displayed دَلالاًcoquetry
وَرأىand he saw رُخْصَthe cheapness of أَدْمُعِيmy tears فَتَغَالاso he raised his price
So I humbled myself when he displayed coquetry,
I became submissive when she showed tenderness,
And he saw how cheap my tears were, so he raised his price.
And saw the cheapness of my tears, so I rebelled.

O you rich in beauty, I ask your affection,

Far be it from you to spurn my request!
رَشأٌa gazelle fawn قَدْindeed أَطعْتُI obeyed فيهِconcerning him غَرامِيmy passion
وَعَصَيْتُand I disobeyed اللُّوَّامَthe reproachers وَالعُذَّالاand the censurers
A gazelle fawn, for whom I have obeyed my passion,
I have pursued my passion though blamed for it
And disobeyed the reproachers and the censurers.
And disobeyed the critic and the censor.
قَتلتْنِيthey slew me جُفونُهُhis eyelids وَهْيَthough they are مَرضَىailing
سَلَبَتْنِيthey robbed me of قِوايَmy strength وَهيَthough they are كَسالاlanguid
His eyelids have slain me, though they are ailing;
Her glances have slain me, and she is the healing,
They robbed me of my strength, though they are languid.
She has drained my strength, and she is the rest.
