لاmay not أَسْهَرَkeep awake اللَّهُGod طِرْفاًan eye نَامَslept عَنْheedless of سَهَرِيmy sleeplessness
وَعَذَّبand tormented القَلْبَthe heart بالأَشْجَانِwith sorrows وَالفِكَرِand thoughts
May God never keep awake an eye that slept heedless of my sleeplessness,
I stay up while my Lord is resting,
and tormented the heart with sorrows and thoughts.
My heart is tortured by sorrows and thoughts,
ولاand may not سَقَىwater دَارَهُhis dwelling يَوْماًever إِذَاwhen سُقِيَتْis watered
دَاريmy dwelling بِدَمْعيwith my tears إلّاexcept وابِلُa downpour of المَطَرِrain
And may nothing ever water his dwelling, when
While my home is watered with my tears,
my dwelling is watered with my tears, except torrential rain.
His home is never watered except by rain.

O people, I have wasted away in my longing for a full moon of night,
Oh people, my passion for the full moon-faced one
upon a supple, verdant branch of arak.
Has healed me, with his tender, delicate branch.
ظَبْيٌa gazelle مِنَfrom among الإِنْسِhumankind لَوْلاwere it not for سِحْرthe spell of مُقْلَتِهِhis eye
ماnot بِتُّI spent the night فيهِon his account بِلَيْلٍin a night غَيْرِnot ذيhaving سَحَرِthe time before dawn
A gazelle among humankind—were it not for the spell of his eye,
He is a gazelle in human form, if not for the magic of his glances,
I would not have passed a dawnless night on his account.
I would not spend my nights besotted, except by a sorcerer.

In his eyebrows, his eyes, and his speech
In his eyebrows, eyes and speech,
is a likeness to bows, arrows, and the bowstring.
There are traces of aloe wood, arrows and lute strings.

A garden of beauty and a horizon of loveliness—thus he
He is the meadow of beauty and the horizon of charm,
has set about uniting the branch and the moon.
He combines the branch and the moon.
