أَمْ نَاصِرٌ جَفْنِي عَلى السَّهَدِ
Is Jabir a tyrant who has withheld union,
Is there a tyrannical unifier who found no consolation in union?
or is Nasir helping my eyelid against sleeplessness?
Or a supporter of my eyelids against wakefulness?

يَدُ الغَرامِ وتُثْنيها يَدُ المَيَدِ
At ease of mind, his sides are not bent
He of happy condition does not fold his cloaks.
by the hand of passion, though the hand of swaying bends them.
The hand of passion folds them, and the hand of sickness.

His body holds a luxurious softness with which a haughty one grows dewy;
In his body is a gentleness with which a ruggedness melts away.
if slenderness sways him, wasting sickness shakes my body.
If a passion stirs him, it stirs the grief of my body.

الصَّادُ عَيْنُكَ والبَاقِي على كَبِدِي
Your name was divided, and by that division you meant:
Your name is divided in a way you wanted,
the ṣād as your eye, and the rest—fire—upon my liver.
The "sad" is your eye, and the rest is on my liver.
